CONSERVING BIODIVERSITY

CONSERVING BIODIVERSITY

Biodiversity is nothing more than all the variety of living beings on the planet, and they are the basis of a healthy and functional ecosystem. An intact ecosystem provides a wealth of valuable environmental services, such as water regulation, erosion protection, carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, among others; in addition to providing raw materials and food ”

In order to identify the positive effects of these measures on the conservation of species biodiversity, data will be obtained on flag species or habitat quality indicators that will be used to carry out a Monitoring of biodiversity of the PNSL, which is expected to be implemented in conjunction with residents of the surrounding communities, in order to involve them in the conservation of local biodiversity.

In addition, it is more resistant to external factors such as storms or climate change. Conserving biodiversity is very useful for the ecosystem, contributes to ensuring the livelihoods of the local population and guarantees the long-term success of the project.

From the point of view of climate protection, biodiversity is a guarantee that captured CO2 remains stored and can be extracted from the atmosphere in the long term.

The area of the project “Lacandón – Forests for Life” is one of the most diverse species in the world and in it live many protected species of plants and animals such as the red macaw and the jaguar. Protecting extensions of intact forest can conserve the habitat of many species. In addition, previously cleared areas are reforested or recovered with native species, so that quasi-natural forests can be developed.
